The US’s demand for lithium-ion batteries is soaring, creating opportunities to tap the USA’s massive subsurface lithium reserves contained in domestic brine repositories.

Direct lithium extraction (DLE) from brine is the environmentally superior lithium mining technique, as it conserves land, and energy, and allows environmentally safe recycling of the brine back underground after lithium removal. Once removed, the lithium currently requires expensive and complex refining to produce today’s preferred cathode material, lithium iron phosphate (LFP). Current refining methods used in the US are multi-stage, expensive, and environmentally risky.
